Creating a clear, calm and harmonious space
For a traditional smudging ritual, choose a time when you can move through your space calmly and without interruption. Open windows and, where appropriate, doors to allow fresh air to circulate.
Step 1 — Prepare Your Space
Gather your White Sage Smudge Stick, a heatproof ceramic bowl or other suitable fireproof vessel, and a feather or your hand to gently guide the smoke if desired.
Ensure the area is free from flammable materials, and keep children and pets safely away from the burning sage.
Step 2 — Light Your Sage
Hold the smudge stick over your heatproof vessel and carefully light the tips of the leaves. Allow them to catch briefly, then gently blow out the flame so the sage smoulders and releases its aromatic smoke.
The sage should smoulder, not burn with an open flame. If it continues to flame, extinguish the flame safely before proceeding.
Step 3 — Set Your Intention
Before you begin, take a moment to centre yourself and focus on the purpose of your ritual.
You may wish to say a prayer, affirmation, or intention such as:
“I release all unwanted energy from this space. May anything that no longer serves the highest good of those within it be gently released. I invite peace, clarity, love, protection, and positive energy to fill this space. May this home be a sanctuary of harmony, light, and wellbeing.”
Use words that feel meaningful and authentic to you.
Step 4 — Begin at the First Corner
Start in one corner of the room. Gently guide the smoke around the area, moving from low to high as you work towards the ceiling.
Move slowly and mindfully, allowing your intention to guide the ritual. Pay attention to corners and areas that you feel may benefit from a little extra attention.
There is no need to fill the room with thick smoke. A gentle waft is sufficient for your ritual.
Step 5 — Move Around the Room
Continue to the next corner, working your way around the room in a steady, clockwise or otherwise personally meaningful direction.
As you move, visualise stagnant or unwanted energy being released and replaced with peace, clarity, and renewed positivity.
When you have completed all four corners, move towards the centre of the room and gently waft the smoke through the space, holding your intention for cleansing, balance, and protection.
Take a moment to pause and reconnect with the feeling you wish to cultivate in the room.
Step 6 — Continue Throughout Your Home or Workplace
If you are cleansing an entire property, begin at the furthest point from the main entrance and work gradually towards the front door, finishing at the entrance.
For multi-storey buildings, you may prefer to begin on the uppermost floor and work your way down.
Continue through each room, hallway, and other areas you wish to include. If appropriate, open cupboards or cabinets to allow fresh air to circulate through those spaces. You may also gently waft the smoke around beds, furniture, and other objects you wish to include in your ritual.
Take particular care around curtains, bedding, paper, wooden surfaces, and other combustible materials. Keep the smudge stick and all embers well away from them.
If you have an attached garage or another enclosed area you wish to cleanse, ensure it is suitable for the ritual and well ventilated.
Important: Never allow smoke to accumulate excessively indoors. Avoid inhaling the smoke directly, and discontinue the ritual if anyone experiences coughing, breathing difficulties, dizziness, or irritation.
Step 7 — Complete Your Ritual
Once you have finished, take a moment to express gratitude and acknowledge the intention you have set.
You may wish to visualise your space filled with light, calmness, and positive energy. Many people enjoy taking a few deep breaths and allowing themselves a moment of stillness before continuing with their day.
You may notice a sense of calm or a change in how the space feels. Experiences vary from person to person, so allow your own experience to unfold naturally.
Step 8 — Extinguish Your Sage Safely
When you have finished, fully extinguish the smudge stick in a suitable fireproof container. Press the burning end into sand or another appropriate extinguishing medium, ensuring that all embers are completely out.
Do not leave your smudge stick smouldering unattended, and do not assume it is extinguished simply because no smoke is visible. Check that it is completely cold before storing it.
Avoid extinguishing it in a garden, plant pot, soil, or other outdoor area where hidden embers could cause a fire. Do not immerse it in water if you intend to reuse it.
Caring for Your White Sage Smudge Stick
Once completely extinguished and cooled, store your smudge stick in a cool, dry place away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight.
Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Fire Safety: Never leave a lit or smouldering smudge stick unattended. Always use a heatproof, non-combustible holder, maintain good ventilation, and keep it away from flammable materials. Do not use around people or animals who may be sensitive to smoke. Never use near smoke alarms in a way that compromises fire safety.
